Boca Raton History
& Culture
As was the case with many South Florida
cities, Henry Morrison Flagler was father. Receiving 2 million acres of South Florida land
in exchange for bringing the East Coast down Florida, Flagler's Model Land Company opened
South Florida and Boca Raton to the 20th Century.
Five families first settled Boca Raton in 1903. By 1915, Boca Raton empowers its first
governing body, the Board of Trade and establishes Boca Raton Power & Light Company.
In 1925, the City is Incorporated and well-known architect and developer Addison Mizner
arrives.
The rapid growth of Florida's southeastern coast after World War I, fueled local
governments and real estate to launch campaigns to encourage tourism and land sales,
presenting developers like Addison Mizner great opportunities in Boca Raton.
The late 1920's brought about investor skepticism, tax investigations by the federal
government and transportation problems, ultimately leading to the collapse of Florida's
land boom. By 1929, the nation was in a depression.
Through the depression, Boca Raton maintained economic stability. Boca Raton Club owner
Clarence H. Geist kept the city afloat.
In 1956, Arthur Vining Davis forms Arvida Corporation, one of Boca Ratons largest
residential & commercial land development companies.
In 1960, the Florida cabinet approves construction of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in
Boca Raton.
In 1962, Royal Palm Plaza opens as Boca Raton's first shopping plaza. The plaza is
affectionately known as "Pink Plaza."
In 1964, Florida Atlantic University (FAU) opens and is dedicated by President Lyndon B.
Johnson. This school would graduate some of the best and brightest business minds in the
country, including your TikiGod.
In 1966, International Business Machines (IBM) "Big Blue" buys 550 acres of land
from Arvida and builds a 300,000 square foot facility. From this facility, the personal
computer and OS/2 Warp are born.
In 1967, The Boca Raton Community Hospital is built entirely from donations raised by the
community residents.
In 1969, Arvida Corporation builds Boca Raton Resort & Club.
In 1972, The Boca Raton Historical Society is founded as a project of the junior service
league.
In 1979, The City Council adopts a comprehensive plan on land-use development. The plan
included a cap on growth, which was overturned in 1980 by the US Supreme Court.
In 1980, The City Council creates the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) in an effort to
revitalize the downtown area.
In 1982, The Boca Raton Historical Society begins restoration of the original Town Hall.
In 1985, The Boca Raton Historical Society restores the FEC Railway Station.
In 1991, WR Grace leaves New York after 126 years, for Boca Raton, bringing 250 employees
and their families with them.
In 1994, The International Museum of Cartoon Art breaks ground. SunTrust Bank, who holds
the mortgage on the Museum, was recently granted approval to repossess the Museum's prized
possession, original sketches of Mickey Mouse, held as collateral on the loan. (NOT NICE).
In 1999, Old Dominion University economists report Boca Raton as the having the largest
per-capita income and buying power in the United States.
Today, Boca Raton is a City surrounded not only by some of Florida's best architecture,
but also strong Art & Culture programs, including the Boca Raton Museum, The
International Museum of Cartoon Art, The Mizner Ampitheatre, The Caldwell Theater Company,
Boca Ballet, Boca Pops and Morikami Gardens.
